Stop assuming your work speaks for itself

This is the most common mistake made by experienced professionals in higher education. You deliver consistently, you’re well-regarded in your team, and you assume that’s enough. It rarely is. The people making promotion decisions need to know your results, your thinking, and your ambition, and unless you make that visible, they won’t.

Start treating your internal profile the same way you’d treat an external job application. Be deliberate about what you’re known for and who knows it.

Get in the room

Visibility in higher education comes from being present in the spaces where decisions are made. That means volunteering for cross-departmental projects, contributing to working groups, and putting yourself forward for initiatives that sit outside your immediate remit. These aren’t distractions from your day job, they’re investments in your reputation.

Senior leaders notice the people who show up beyond their job description. More importantly, they start to picture those people in bigger roles.

Build relationships upwards and sideways

Promotion decisions in higher education are rarely made by one person. They involve heads of department, HR, and often senior leadership. Building genuine working relationships across those levels, not through networking for its own sake, but through doing good work that brings you into contact with them, is one of the most effective things you can do.

Equally important are lateral relationships. Colleagues in other departments become advocates. A finance professional who’s worked closely with IT, HR, and student services builds a cross-institutional reputation that a specialist in one lane simply doesn’t have.

Make your ambitions known

Many professionals in higher education are reluctant to say openly that they want to progress. Don’t be. Have a direct conversation with your line manager about where you want to go and what you need to do to get there. Ask for stretch assignments. Request feedback on what a more senior version of your role looks like.

This isn’t pushiness, it’s professionalism. Managers can’t advocate for you if they don’t know you want it.

Document your impact

When a role does open up, you want to be able to make your case immediately and specifically. Keep a running record of your achievements, projects delivered, efficiencies created, initiatives led, and results measured. In a sector that doesn’t always default to metrics, candidates who can quantify their contribution stand out sharply.

This record also forms the foundation of your cover letter and interview answers when the time comes.
